Genre Research - Task 1 - Research into a Music Magazine

Task 1: Research into Music Magazine

Kerrang! is a UK-based magazine devoted to rock music published by Bauer Media Group. Its name is based on the onomatopoeia word that comes from the sound when playing a power chord on a distorted electric guitar. The devoted audience are rock fans, 60% males and 40% females with Kerrang!'s demographic falling between social classes D-C. The ethnic target is white British with a target population of 16-24 year olds. The magazine brings niche bands to the limelight with tour information and exclusive interviews with the bands themselves. The magazine has been through many different publishers and iterations to follow the ageing of their target audience and trend changing. The peak of Kerrang!'s success was within the 2000's with it being the best-British selling magazine.

Rolling Stone is a fortnightly magazine that focuses on popular culture. Published by Jann Wenner, the magazine has garnered a cult following with music fans around the world, and thus has welcomed popular icon status. Through the years Rolling Stone has constantly been evolving to fit it's target audience and demographic with different content, but still keeping the same house style. Rolling Stone also adopts a focus on youth culture, by slightly shifting the genre focus from primarily rock to other media at a certain time such as pop, TV, movies and politics. To quote the Rolling Stone Media Pack; "Rolling Stone goes beyond just taking the pulse of youth Rolling Stone is the pulse of youth culture." As the media pack below says that the magazine is mainly focused toward male adults with 62.6% instead of 37.4% for females.

NME is a music magazine focusing on rock, alternative and indie music. Standing for New Musical Express, NME has been publishing for over 50 years. NME reached most of it's success within the 1970's with it reaching cult status as the best selling music magazine. NME currently has a circulation of 423,924 and a readership of 289,000. This 70-something page magazine is responsible for breaking out major acts such as Jimi Hendrix, Arctic Monkeys and Oasis and for creating the first UK singles chart. NME is currently published by IPC Media. The magazine's audience is (as the media pack image suggests) male orientated, with the median age being around 23.
